Postdoc Position at Flexible Structures Laboratory

Your mission :
We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in our Flexible Structures Laboratory (fleXLab) at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, EPFL. The research is in the area of the mechanics of slender structures, with a combined focus on experiments, computation, and theory. As we value individual research interests and the unique perspectives they bring, the specifics of the research project will be thoughtfully shaped around the successful candidate's interests, as identified during the interview process. Potential areas of study include the mechanics of surgical knots, shell buckling, functional instabilities in rotary systems, and programmable materials and structures.

Main duties and responsibilities include :
As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will be expected to lead and execute original experimental, computational, and/or theoretical research. This involves the design and fabrication of innovative experimental apparatuses, as well as the comprehensive acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of experimental data, rationalizing these through effective modeling. You will communicate your findings through peer-reviewed manuscripts and presentations at conferences. We value mentorship and collaboration, and you will have the opportunity to assist with the supervision of Ph.D., Masters, and Bachelor students. Further, you may have the chance to collaborate with external academic and industrial partners. Lastly, you will be actively involved in teaching activities of our laboratory, which include assisting with lectures, preparing pedagogical materials, and supervising student projects.

Your profile :
Candidates should have recently been awarded, or are about to obtain, a Ph.D. in Mechanical, Civil, or Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline. You should possess substantial expertise in experimental research, complemented by an interest in computational and theoretical modeling. It's essential to be enthusiastic, driven, and eager to collaborate within a dynamic team environment where diverse group members combine their complementary expertise and skill sets to tackle complex problems.

We offer :
The successful Postdoc will join a vibrant, collaborative, international, and diverse research team, renowned for its interdisciplinary expertise in experimental, computational, and theoretical mechanics. The focus of research activity at the fleXLab is centered around curiosity-driven research in the general area of physics and mechanics of soft/compliant mechanical structures. Situated within the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, the fleXLab boasts unique, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and experimental equipment, offering an unparalleled research environment. Opportunities for involvement in the teaching of mechanics-related classes will be provided both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Start date :
The anticipated start date is October 1st, 2023, or shortly thereafter. To ensure equal consideration, please submit your application by July 1st, 2023. Interviews are projected to occur towards the end of August.

Your application should include the following components: (i) a cover letter, (ii) a CV, (iii) contact details for a minimum of 2 references who can speak to your qualifications and experience, and (iv) a copy of what you consider your most impactful publication to date.

Term of employment :
Fixed-term (CDD)

Duration :
The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of extensions based on mutual agreement, up to a maximum of three years.
